The Brazilian northeast in most part is characterized by the semi-arid climate, presenting high temperatures and little amount of rains. Meanwhile in January 2004 occurred strong rainfalls that motivated this study of vegetation green up in that region. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the vegetation response in the Northeast Brazil through Linear Spectral Mixture Model and precipitation data analysis. The Linear Spectral Mixture Model was applied to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to generate vegetation, soil, and shade fraction images. The MODIS images were acquired from January 2001 to December 2007 time period. The MOD13A3 Vegetation Indices monthly product with 1 km spatial resolution was used. The precipitation data was derived from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). The study area encompasses thorny scrub (caatinga), transitional rain forest, savanna (cerrado), transitional palm forest, tropical semideciduous forest and agricultural areas. Time series analysis techniques were used to compare the response of land cover in the vegetation, soil and shade fraction images with precipitation data. The Principal Component Analysis was applied to fraction images to obtain the spatial variability in the study area. The autocorrelation results showed the temporal dependence between spectral response and precipitation data. The thorny scrub response showed in the vegetation, soil and shade fraction images presented significant correlation with precipitation and showed more variability than transitional rain forest.
